More Than Life
There is a song entitled “More Than Life” written and performed by the Australian artist Whitley. It is a simple, short song that seems to talk about the simple things experienced in a past relationship and how they change once they are over. It talks vaguely about healing and moving on to experience life.
The desire to be happy and content is echoed numerous times in the chorus, “I want this more than life”. It is a calming song to listen to. I found myself unconsciously saying those words in my heart and wishing for happiness. It made me want to retreat into nature so that I could experience the tranquility that the song made me feel.
Throughout time, mankind has sought happiness in different ways.
“The cause of some going to war, and of others avoiding it…”
There is something innate in all humans that make us yearn for something more than life, a happiness apart from that which we see around us. Blaise Pascal says this,
All men seek happiness, this is without exception. Whatever different means they employ, they all tend to this end. The cause of some going to war, and of others avoiding it, is the same desire in both, attended with different views. The will never takes the least step but to this object. This is the motive of every action of every man, even of those who hang themselves.
There is one thing that we should want more than life. Our lives should be consumed with Jesus. It starts with Jesus, it ends with Jesus. It all comes back to Jesus. He is what I want more than life. He is what my soul craves and what truly delights me.
